The Australian Kangaroo Penny Coin Watch

The Australian penny was introduced in 1911 and minted until 1965.

The original design featured a reverse with the words “ONE PENNY COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA” until 1938 when it was redesigned by George Kruger Gray (1880 – 1943) to include a kangaroo and the Commonwealth star. All of the pennies featuring George VI and Elizabeth II had a kangaroo on the reverse, except for the 1965 penny which featured a Roman. The kangaroo image was also on the Australian half-penny and has since been included on the one dollar coin and the bullion silver kangaroo.

The coin was equivalent in its dimensions, composition and value to the British penny, as the two currencies were fixed at par.

It was worth one-twelfth of an Australian shilling and 1/240 of an Australian pound. When decimalisation happened on 14 February 1966, the coin value was equal to 0.8333¢.

Weighing 9.45 grams, from 1910 until 1945, the penny was made from 97.5% copper, 2.00% zinc, and 0.5% tin.
